Biography

Dr. Holly Cate is a William Collie Fellow in the Multiple Sclerosis Research Group within the Centre for Neuroscience and the Howard Florey Institute.  She completed her PhD in the USA 2001 where she investigated the development, functional organization and regeneration of invertebrate chemosensory systems.  Following completion of her PhD, she moved to Australia and was awarded a NHMRC Peter Doherty Training fellowship to undertake a post-doctoral position at the Walter & Eliza Hall Institute, Melbourne.  In 2003, she moved to the Howard Florey Institute (HFI) and helped establish the Multiple Sclerosis Group lead by Prof. Trevor Kilpatrick. She established for the group the use of laser capture microdissection to isolate small brain areas for microarray analysis and led collaboration with Prof. Gary Egan (Neuroimaging, UniMelb & HFI) investigating the MRI parameters for resolving myelin damage, axonal damage, and oedema in mouse models of demyelinating disease.  She also headed contractual research collaborations with Dr. Brank Mitrovik (Berlex) and Dr. Victoria Perreau (Uni Melb), investigating the profile of genes expressed in adult brain stem cells in response to central demyelination. In 2007, she joined the Centre for Neuroscience, University of Melbourne and was awarded a William Collie Fellowship to investigate molecular mechanisms in the regenerative response to central demyelination while maintaining her link to the HFI as an honorary fellow. Since this time, Dr. Cate has successfully obtained research funding through NHMRC and the University of Melbourne Early Career Researcher Scheme.

Dr. Cate has served on the Postgraduate Matters Committee (HFI), Postgraduate Student/Mentor Scheme Mentor (HFI), and Judging Panel for Annual Student presentations (HFI) from 2004-2007.  In 2004, she was selected for the Early Career Researcher Development Program, Uni Melb and in 2005, was selected as HFI Early Career Researcher delegate at Science at the Shine Dome, AAS.  Dr. Cate was an invited participant at Multiple Sclerosis Neurobiology Workshop- MSRA (2005 & 2007) and at the Victorian Cabinet Biotechnology and Medical Research forum, Bio21, Melbourne (2008).  She has served as an ad-hoc reviewer for Journal of Neuroscience, Journal of Clinical Neurology, Alcohol and Alcoholism, Biological Bulletin, Marine and Freshwater Behaviour and Physiology and NHMRC and as an examiner for PhD and honours theses.  She has supervised three undergraduate students (USA), one honours student (H1) and three PhD students. She is a Founding member and the current Chapter Representative of the Melbourne Chapter of the US Society for Neuroscience.
