Biography
Dr. Dan Lubman is a Consultant Psychiatrist and Associate Professor at the ORYGEN Research Centre, University of Melbourne, where he heads a clinical research unit that investigates problematic substance use and co-occurring mental health issues in youth. Since 2003, he has partnered with a broad range of drug and alcohol services and research centres, both nationally and internationally, and has successfully obtained over $1,000,000 in treatment grants to develop comorbidity services for young people with co-occurring mental health and substance use issues. He is a chief investigator on a number of large research projects investigating substance use amongst young people, including studies within primary care, drug treatment and mental health settings. In recognition of his work, he was recently awarded the Organon Young Psychiatrist Award by the RANZCP.
In 2004, he was invited to become a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for Addiction Neuroscience Network Australia (ANNA), a national body promoting neurobiological research into addiction. In 2006, he was elected Chair of the RANZCP Section for Addiction Psychiatry, which is responsible for overseeing drug and alcohol training and policy for the College. Recently, he was invited to become a member of the Advisory Committee of the newly established National Cannabis Prevention and Information Centre. He is frequently approached to lecture on these topics, and teaches on undergraduate and postgraduate courses. He regularly serves as a reviewer for a range of journals and granting bodies including Addiction, Drug and Alcohol Review, Medical Journal of Australia and Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica. He is also a member of the International Advisory Board of the newly established international journals Early Intervention in Psychiatry and Current Drug Abuse Reviews.
He is a regular presenter at international conferences in the fields of addiction and comorbidity, and has presented over 70 abstracts since 2002. He has published over 70 peer-reviewed scientific papers and book chapters, mostly relating to substance use topics, such as comorbidity, drug use in young people or the neurobiology of addiction. Since the beginning of 2003, he has been involved in attracting over $3,000,000 in research funding, including an NHMRC Centre of Clinical Research Excellence Grant focusing on preventive and early intervention strategies in emerging mental disorders in young people.
