Professor Peter R. Ebeling is an endocrinologist and Chair of the Department of Medicine, University of Melbourne and Head of Endocrinology at The Western Hospital, Footscray, Victoria. His doctoral research was on parathyroid hormone-related protein with Prof. T. John Martin and he then spent a three-year post-doctoral fellowship with Dr. B. Larry Riggs at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, USA doing clinical research in osteoporosis, which he has continued on his return to Australia. In 2003 he was a Visiting Research Fellow at Botnar Centre, Oxford University Institute of Musculoskeletal Sciences, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Headington, Oxford, UK. His research interests include public health issues related to vitamin D deficiency, the pathophysiology and management of post-transplantation osteoporosis, particularly following bone marrow transplantation; the genetics and treatment of osteoporosis in men; the efficacy and safety of vertebroplasty and the clinical utility of biochemical markers of bone turnover. He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research and Reumatología Clínica. He is Honorary Editor of Osteoblast and a member of the Medical and Scientific Committee of Osteoporosis Australia. He is co-Chair of the Australian Musculoskeletal Quality Improvement Programme and he was previously President of the Australian and New Zealand Bone and Mineral Society. He has over 100 peer-reviewed publications and is regularly asked to speak at international and national scientific meetings. Professor Ebeling is also Chairman of the Victorian State Committee of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.
