Biography
Professor Andrew Sinclair holds a joint appointment with the University of Melbourne, Department of Paediatrics and the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute as Divisional Director of Early Development and Disease. He leads an internationally recognised research group that focuses on gonad development and dysfunction. His contributions have been fundamental to the advancement of the field, including the identification and characterisation of the testis determining gene (SRY) and other genes critical for gonad development. Andrew has an extensive publication record, including six Nature papers, some of which have become ISI citation classics with over 1,000 citations each. He has been awarded over $10 million in competitive grant funding, including an ARC National Centre of Excellence and an NHMRC Program Grant. He is regularly invited to present plenary lectures at national and international meetings. Andrew was President of the Australian Society for Medical Research in 2004, and led national advocacy efforts seeking increased Federal Government funding of health and medical research. In 2005, the Federal Minister for Health appointed Andrew to the Australian Biotechnology Advisory Council which provides high-level independent advice to the Federal Ministers for Health, Education & Science, and Industry.
