Lisa Bourke holds a Masters from Utah State University and a PhD from Penn State University in Rural Sociology. She has researched rural communities, rural young people and rural health for almost 20 years, the previous 13 years in Australia. Lisa uses Wilkinson's perspective of rural communities and his focus on strong and weak ties to explain social relations in rural communities. As a researcher, Lisa has been involved with research, health and community projects which have attracted over $2,623,000. She has directly attracted more than $670,000 in research funds and completed almost 20 research projects after gaining my Ph.D. Lisa has 43 refereed papers and book chapters, of which she is lead author of over 30 of these and she co-edited a major text in Rural Sociology in Australia, Rurality Bites. In recent years, Lisa's key projects have been around the health and wellbeing of rural Australians, particularly focusing on young people, Aboriginal people, health consumers and the field of rural health.
