Biography
During the last decade Kelsey has contributed at both national and international levels to the intimate partner violence field. A major contribution has been that for her phd, she developed a new measure of domestic violence the Composite Abuse Scale, which is the first Australian validated multidimensional measure of partner abuse. It is currently being used by researchers from Canada, United States of America, Russia, Spain, The Netherlands and the United Kingdom. It was published in the Centres for Disease Control Compendium of intimate partner violence measures in 2006. She currently leads the first large domestic violence screening trial in primary care (NHMRC). In 2006, she co-edited a book on “Intimate partner abuse for health professionals” and has five first authored book chapters including one on future directions for research, education and policy. In addition, she is on two Cochrane reviews of screening and advocacy interventions for domestic violence. She is invited on a regular basis to give talks at national conferences and gave a keynote presentation at the World Psychiatric Conference in 2007 on the topic of domestic violence. She regularly teaches domestic violence to undergraduates and postgraduate medical and nursing practitioners. She played a significant role in the development of the international guidelines on clinician management of all family members and has developed an innovative curriculum for general practitioners. She translates her research into policy and practice via this teaching and she is currently on the management committee of the Domestic Violence Resource Centre Victoria. She has worked part time (0.4 - 0.5) for all of her academic working time. Despite the administrative and teaching load in these positions, she has attracted over 2 million dollars in competitive funding as a chief investigator and published sixteen first-authored and eighteen co-authored publications in international and national refereed journals.
