Biography
Barrie Shelton’s primary interests are in urban design, urban design history and theory, and urban morphology. His career has spanned university teaching, research, scholarly and popular writing, and practice. It has also included leadership roles in design education, and membership of government advisory panels and working groups advisory in several states.
Balancing his international activities, he has made a marked contribution to the shaping of Hobart’s waterfront through a series of works from 1986 to 2007, including the Sullivans Cove Planning Review (co-authored as urban design consultant in 1991 and recognised with a PIA national award in 1993 for urban design excellence) and the Hobart Waterfront Urban Design Framework (2005).
His work crosses both discipline and national boundaries and this is reflected in the range of journals in both their subject areas (architecture, planning, urban design, cultural) and geographical locations (Europe, Asia, America and Australia) in which his writing has appeared.
He has a strong record as an effective teacher and research supervisor with consistently high scores recorded in independently conducted user surveys of students’ learning experience in his subjects. He has been head of the Department of an Urban Design Department at the University of Tasmania, and Associate Dean (Graduate Studies) and head of the Architecture Discipline at the University of Sydney. Further, Barrie has received a number of awards at state, national and international levels for professional work, competitions and scholarship.
