Biography
Colleen came to the Department of Otolaryngology in 2004 after five years as a Research Assistant in the Linguistics Program of Monash University. She worked on a variety of projects during her time at Monash, including the Monash University Dimensions of Spoken Australian English Project – The Talk of Young People with Dr Laura Tollfree, The Endangered Moluccan Languages Project: Eastern Indonesia and the Dutch Diaspora with Dr Margaret Florey and colleagues, as well as being co-principal organiser of ALS2005 with Professor Kate Burridge.
Since moving to Otolaryngology Colleen has worked with Dr Julia Sarant studying the impact of hearing impairment on language outcomes in preschool children (more on this project here), and with Dr Karyn Galvin investigating the potential benefits of bilateral cochlear implants. Colleen is also preparing publications for the now-completed ARC Linkage Grant entitled Vocal empowerment: Researching the effect of actor voice training on young adults with cochlear implants and hearing aids. In partnership with the Faculty of the Victorian College of the Arts and Cochlear Ltd, this project has examined the effects of an actor vocal training programme on the voices and psyches of young adults with hearing impairment.
In an effort to bring together her interests in linguistics and hearing impairment, Colleen began a PhD mid-2008 which is investigating the perception and production of intonation as viewed through an autosegmental-metrical framework.
