Biography
Professor Richard Tomlinson is currently the Chair of Urban Planning in the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at the University of Melbourne.
Professor Tomlinson was a Fulbright Scholar whilst studying for his PhD at Rutgers, and won a Robert S McNamara Fellowship for research associated with his book on Urban Development Planning, written during his time as a Guest Scholar at the Brookings Institute.

- 1993-2008: Visiting Professor, School of Architecture and Planning, previously Graduate School of Public and Development Management, University of Witwatersrand.
- 2007-2008: Visiting Professor, Graduate School of Architecture and Planning, Columbia University.
- 2002-2006: Member of the Board of Research Committee RC 21 Regional and Urban Development of the International Sociological Association.
- 1997: Guest Scholar at the New School for Social Research wile researching material on comparative inner-city regeneration.
- 1991-1992: Guest Scholar at The Brookings Institution while writing book on Urban Development Planning. A Robert S McNamara from The World Bank funded the research.
- 1991-1996: Corresponding Editor of the International Journal of Urban and Regional Research.
- 1989-1997: Founder and Editor, then member of the Editorial Committee of the Urban Forum.
- 1989-1997: Member of the Editorial Committee of Development Southern Africa.
- 1986-1987: Visiting Scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology while writing book, Urbanization and Post-Apartheid South Africa. the research was funded by a grant from Anglo American and De Beers Chairman's Fund.
- 1981-1988: Lecturer, then Senior Lecturer in the Department of Town and Regional Planning of the University of Witwatersrand.
- 1984: Recipient of the Richard Ward Research Award for research in industrial decentralisation and policies to prevent the urbanisation of Africans.
