Biography
Dr Georgiou gained his PhD through the University of Melbourne and conducted his research at the Walter & Eliza Hall Institute. His research looked at modification of graft immunogenicity and histocompatibility matching on fetal pancreas transplantation. This was followed by a post-doctoral fellowship at the Childhood Diabetes Centre in Denver, Colorado where he researched into the pathogenesis of Type I diabetes in the BB rat. He returned to the Walter & Eliza Hall Institute as an NHMRC post-doctoral fellow and continued his research into Type I diabetes particularly in the areas of thymic function in autoimmunity, xenotransplantation and the pathogenesis of diabetes in the NOD mouse.
Since joining the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology his research has focused on the pathogenesis of preterm labour and gestational diabetes mellitus and other perinatal complications. He has a keen interest in the application of Proteomics in perinatal complications and the development of early diagnostic assays. He was instrumental in the design and establishment of the Perinatal Research Laboratory at the Mercy Hospital for Women.
Dr Georgiou is an author of over 60 publications, proceedings, chapters or reports. He has presented or co-authored over 80 papers at national and international conferences.
