Biography
Professor DeWitt is Head of the University of Melbourne School of Rural Health and Clinical Dean for the Rural Clinical School. She completed a Masters of Science (MSc) at Trinity College, Cambridge University before attending Harvard Medical School where she obtained an MD. She completed her post-graduate training at the University of Washington and served on faculty in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Washington for over 10 years. She devoted her time to seeing patients, teaching students and residents in the clinical setting, working with the Rural/Underserved Opportunities Program, and serving as Director of WWAMI Regional Community Based Education for Internal Medicine. While there she completed the University Teaching Scholars program and received a Certificate in Medical Education.
A generalist physician and Fellow of both the American and Royal Australasian Colleges of Physicians, her clinical interests include diabetes. In 2002, her peers selected her as one of the “Best Doctors in America”. In addition to teaching awards, she received the Inaugural University of Washington Alumnae Early Career Achievement Award in 2006. She has written articles on Rural Training, Career choice, and on Developing Interactive Educational Websites; has edited and authored books for patients (heart disease and low back pain) and medical professionals (Outpatient Medicine and the American College of Physicians’ Medical Knowledge Self Assessment Program); and is co-author of two books on Community Based Teaching. She chaired the U.S. National Board of Medical Examiners Chronic Illness Committee for 3 years.
