Biography

Dr Kirsty Harris completed her thesis in 2007 on the roles and skills of Australian Army nurses who served overseas during World War I. Her current research includes women at Gallipoli, particularly those who served in the Australian Army Nursing Service; and the life and work of Miss Fannie Eleanor Williams, a founding member of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research.

Winner of the C.E.W. Bean Prize for Military History in 2008, Dr Harris' book from her thesis on military nursing practice is due to be published in 2010.

She also has interests in women in the military, army nursing pre World War II, the Light Horse in World War I, the nursing of the Spanish influenza pandemic, the Mildura settlement, the Mallee brand, female convicts of the First Fleet, and the life of Francois Girard who was a Frenchman sent to Australia in 1820 courtesy of the British Government.
