Biography
Monash University medical degree (1982), and some hospital experience in Australia and the UK.
Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (1986), then 4 years as a clinician in remote rural areas of Mozambique (helping keep the national health service running during the civil war).
Master's degree in Liverpool (1991), then a year as project epidemiologist in the Adult Morbidity & Mortlaity Project (a DfID-funded research project) in Tanzania.
Four more years in Mozambique (1994-98) as epidemiologist in the provincial health directorate of Manica Province.
PhD at Monash University in the Dep't of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine (2002), including six months as senior epidemiologist in the WHO team creating a disease surveillance and epidemic preparedness unit for east Timor during the UN period (Nov 1999 - May 2000).
Head of Epidemiology in the Victorian Infectious Diseases Service, Royal Melbourne Hospital (and Victorian Gov't Department of Human Services). (2002-2007)
Associate Professor in the Nossal Institute for Global Health (2007-present).
