Biography
His main research interests are on the independent and combined effects of physical activity and nutrition during growth and ageing for maintaining or improving musculoskeletal health and function. His research in older adults has focused on the effects of different modes of exercise and nutrition (calcium, vitamin D, protein or the combination) for the prevention and management of osteoporosis and sarcopenia (muscle loss). He is also interested in health related issues regarding vitamin D deficiency and low grade systemic inflammation, and has extensive experience in conducting large scale long-term intervention trials utilising state-of-the-art bone and muscle imaging technology (eg. MRI, QCT and DXA). Dr Daly’s research expertise also extends into growth and development, where he has conducted a number of long-term studies examining the effects of exercise and/or nutrition on longitudinal growth, bone mineral accrual and muscle development.
A/Prof Daly was awarded his PhD in 1997. He worked at the Centre for Physical Activity and Nutrition Research in the School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences at Deakin University for 10 years. During this period he was awarded three nationally competitive research fellowships, including two prestigious NHMRC awards. In 2006, he was a Visiting Senior Research Fellow in the Clinical and Molecular Osteoporosis Research Unit, Malmö, Sweden. In 2008, he accepted his current position with the Department of Medicine, The University of Melbourne, Western Hospital as the Senior/Principal Research Scientist.
He has published widely in a range of high ranking international journals, and recently published a book titled “Optimizing Bone Mass and Strength”. He has been invited to speak at a range of local, national and international scientific meetings in the USA, Canada, Sweden and Switzerland. Over the past 10 years he has received 14 national and international peer reviewed awards for his research.
A/Prof Daly is on the editorial board of the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sport and served on the NHMRC Grant Review Panel for musculoskeletal disorders. He is currently a board member of Sports Medicine Australia (Victoria branch).
