Biography
Dr Leanne Hides is a research fellow at the ORYGEN Research Centre, University of Melbourne and a clinical psychologist. She has over 10 years of clinical and research experience in the assessment and treatment of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders in young people. Dr Hides was awarded her PhD in January 2003. This thesis prospectively examined the influence of cannabis use on psychotic relapse. Dr Hides has expanded this body of work to examine models of co-occurring psychosis and substance and most recently substance-induced psychosis. She also manages the Melbourne site of an NHMRC Project Grant (lead by Professor Sharon Dawe) that examined psychosis proneness in 250 amphetamine users over a 12-month period. Over the past 5 years, Dr Hides has also managed a large project which developed new services for young people with depression and substance use in Melbourne. Dr Hides has developed, implemented and evaluated a mental health screening tool and cognitive behaviour treatment and training program. To date, over 1.0 million dollars in treatment funding has been awarded to the initiative including a large beyondblue funded study examining the effectiveness of the youth comorbidity service model. Dr Hides lectures at the undergraduate and postgraduate level on the assessment and treatment of co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders in young people. She has presented at over 20 national and international conferences, and participated in 7 symposia on comorbidity. Since 2003, Dr Hides has published over 30 peer-reviewed scientific papers and book chapters, mostly relating to comorbidity in young people. She also serves as a reviewer for a range of journals and granting bodies including, Schizophrenia Research, British Journal of Psychiatry, Addiction and Drug and Alcohol Review. Dr Hides has been involved with the Australian Association of Cognitive and Behaviour Therapy (AACBT) since 1997, and has been the Victorian state president since 2005.
