Biography

Dr Mercuri is an experienced research scientist who has worked as a research assistant and research fellow/officer over the last 16 years in areas of immunology, endocrinology, arthritis, and cancer. Dr Mercuri undertook her PhD studies examining aggrecan degradation by metalloproteinases, within the Orthopaedic Research Unit, Department of Paediatrics at the Royal Children's Hospital, Parkville. Dr Mercuri was then awarded a Wellcome Trust Travelling Fellowship, to pursue her research in examining the roles of ADAMs in the shedding of the HGF receptor at the School of Biological Studies, University of East Anglia, UK. On her return to Australia Dr Mercuri was awarded a NH&MRC Part Time Training Fellowship within the Dept. of Surgery, St Vincent's Hospital, University of Melbourne, studying collagen regulation of the Matris Metalloproteinases in breast cancer metastasis. At this point, Dr Mercuri expanded her career options by incorporating and gaining experience in Project Management within the department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Melbourne. Whilst working as a Project Officer, Dr Mercuri also took on another part-time role at the Burnet Institute as the Microbicide Research Officer. Her role was to facilitate and manage the Burnet's role within a NIH funded Microbicide Development Consortium. As part of the Clinical Trial Administration team, Dr Mercuri was involved and underwent training in the conduct and preparation of a large multi-institutional HIV clinical trial.
