Biography
Tilman Ruff is an infectious diseases and public health physician, with particular interests in vaccines and immunisation, and in the urgent public health imperative to abolish nuclear weapons. He is Associate Professor in the Nossal Institute for Global Health at the University of Melboure, serves as International Medical Advisor to Australian Red Cross; and technical advisor to the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) and UNICEF on immunisation programs in Pacific Island countries.
Tilman has played a leading role in the deveopment of travel medicine in Australia; worked extensively on heaptitis B control, immunisation and maternal and child health in Indonesia and Pacific Island countries; and was previosuly regional medical director for a major vaccine manufacturer, directing Australia's largest clinical vaccine research and development program.
Tilman has been active in the Medical Association for Prevention of War (Australia) for 27 years and is its immediate past national President; and in International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (Nobel Peace Laureate 1985), including terms as Asia-Pacific Vice-Present, Boston-based Consultant on Policy and Programs, and current Board member. He serves on the Strategic Council of the Climate Institute
Tilman chairs the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, supported by the Poola Foundation (Tom Kantor Fund). In October 2008 he was invited to serve as one of the two civil society advisors to the Co-Chairs of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament.
