Biography
Janet McGaw is a part-time Lecturer in Architectural Design in the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at the University of Melbourne. She is a qualified architect and has a PhD by Creative Works from the University of Melbourne. Her research work, teaching and creative practice investigate ways to make urban space more equitable. Janet uses methods that are discursive, collaborative and sometimes ephemeral. She has worked with homeless women, researched graffiti art practices and currently is part of a working group with Reconciliation Victoria, The Melbourne City Council and the Traditional Owners Land Justice Group to advance the idea of a dedicated cultural precinct for Victorian Aboriginals on a major civic site in Melbourne. Her work is currently part of a global exhibition of 14 women architects called 'Feminist Practices' that has been travelling in the United States since April 2008. Janet teaches design studios at Masters and thesis levels, and in 2009 coordinates the first architectural design studio in the Bachelor of Environments programme. When not working as an academic, Janet maintains a small private practice. Her 'Warehouse Conversion in Ascot Vale' won the Australian Institute of Architects, Victorian Chapter, award for best alterations and extensions in 2006.
