Biography
Professor Ian Lang
Born in Australia in 1959 and educated at Melbourne High School, Ian Lang completed the undergraduate program at Swinburne filmschool in 1980, and has since combined the careers of an award-winning independent documentary maker with teaching at film schools in Melbourne, Brisbane and Hong Kong.
As Director, recent films for Australia's national SBS network include 'The Art of Place' narrated by Phillip Adams about the largest ever art exchange between Viet Nam and Australia, and 'Millennium Shift: the search for new world art' shot in 16 countries over two years about the rise of a united Asia as a global cultural power. In 2007, ABC Television bought his latest half hour documentary on contemporary Pacific art 'Reframing Papua New Guinea', filmed over 10 years.
As Producer, his Iranian feature-length documentary Fahimeh’s Story, was in 2004 awarded Australia’s national ‘Independent Spirit’ Award at the Independent Film Awards. He Executive Produced the multi-awarded documentary 'Grandfathers and Revolution's in 2000 about the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. Lang gained a PhD for his work in international documentary at Griffith University, where he became Foundation Chair of the Griffith Film School in 2004. Now living in Melbourne, Ian Lang is Professor and Head of his former renamed alma mater, the Film and Television School of the Victorian College of the Arts at the University of Melbourne.
