Biography
LOUISE HUBBARD received her MFA by research at RMIT University in 2001 and has participated in solo and group shows since 1977.
She has also been a writer, director, producer of documentaries, short drama and experimental works for cinema and television from 1983-1998.
Her art practice references the expanded fields of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and the moving image. The nature of training, submission and subordination is her obsession as are the spaces in which subjectivity and knowledge are formed. Hubbard uses a combination of crude and refined approaches in her practice, shedding any tendency toward embellishment or inscrutable artifice.
" The materials I am drawn towards are manufactured in global quantities and are of institutional utility. These materials are tried and tested when subjected to acts of control and duress, measure and fitness. Sometimes this process is witnessed and captured through a camera lens, resulting in documents that play on photography’s power to empirically index untenable actions. Sometimes the resultant videos are projected in relationship to sculptural elements and on other occasions the sculptures simply have an outing on their own. "
