IAN GODFREY, M.Mus, B.Ed(sec)

Ian Godfrey graduated in music from the Melbourne College of Advanced Education and went on to specialise in the areas of music education and performance. Locally he has performed with the MSO and Orchestra Victoria on clarinet, bass clarinet and various saxophones. As a member of the Melbourne Saxophone Quartet he has performed in concerts in Europe and Asia as well as playing on many recordings. On the commercial side Ian has played in over 30 shows from ‘A Chorus Line’ in 1975 to ‘The Producers’, as well as backing Ray Charles, John Farnham, Anthony Warlow, Kylie Minogue, and many others. In 1999 he became the first Australian to complete a M.Mus in performance on the baritone saxophone.

Ian’s research interests are: music for the baritone saxophone, Australian saxophone music in general and single reed articulation with respect to teaching and performance.

At the Faculty of Music, Ian established the saxophone ensemble and directs the Big Band, with an emphasis is on 20th and 21st Century music and the promotion of Australian repertoire.

At the Faculty of Education, Ian teaches instrumental music pedagogy, as part of pre-service training.
