Biography

Margaret Grose received her degree in Agricultural Science, working with soils and water, in 1981. Her PhD was in the ecophysiology of Australian plants in relation to water stress and disease, focussing on the Proteaceae. Margaret worked for several years as a research scientist at the Universities of Sydney, Oxford, and Cambridge. At Cambridge she focussed on theoretical ecology and was Research Fellow in the Mathematical Biology group in the Department of Plant Sciences. She returned to Australia in 1997 and graduated in Landscape Architecture in 2001. Margaret has worked as an environmental scientist/landscape architect in an environmental firm, focusing on designed environments of water.

Prior to coming to Melbourne in early 2007, Margaret was a Research Fellow at UWA, working on suburban design. Her principal area of research interest is ecological design of suburban areas, and all its facets. A passion for the Australian flora remains a key driver of all her research and she maintains a great interest in rural landscapes. Margaret’s work encompasses science, landscape ecology and landscape architecture, and planning.

Margaret is the Deputy Chair of the Course Standing Committee for the Bachelor of Environments and Undergraduate coordinator for Landscape Architecture. She coordinates the subject Constructed Ecologies in the Masters of Landscape Architecture, and oversees the subjects Landscape Practice and Landscape Assessment and Planning in the undergraduate degree. In the Bachelor of Environments she teaches into Natural Environments, Designing with Plants, and Greening Landscapes, and will be giving the capstone studio Designed Ecologies in 2010.
