Biography

Scott Heyes recently completed his PhD dissertation in Geography at McGill University, Montreal. He was awarded the John Crampton Travelling Scholarship from 2002-2005 to undertake indigenous studies of landscape in Canada for his doctorate.

With Montreal as a base, Scott travelled to the Arctic region of Nunavik on several occasions over four years, where he lived and hunted with Inuit families. He continues to pursue landscape studies research in Nunavik. He is an avid outdoor enthusiast and adventurer.

His thesis explored how a band of Inuit in the remote community of Kangiqsualujjuaq, Arctic Quebec perceive the Nunavik landscape. In addition, the study reported on the status and breadth of traditional knowledge that three generations of Kangiqsualujjuaq Inuit have of the coast. Using an intergenerational approach to explore whether perceptions of the land-water interface were consistent or inconsistent across and between the generations, the cohort responded to questions about spatial concepts, travel patterns, traditional narratives, senses of place, and hunting knowledge. In the field Scott collected a number of Inuit drawings and mythological stories of the coast.

Collectively, these mediums offered a tangible view of the Inuit knowledge base of the coast that have been wrought by changes to the physical landscape, to patterns of social interaction, and to new and non-traditional pedagogical methods. Scott's PhD thesis is available online as a PDF document (172MB) through the Humanities and Social Science Library at McGill University, Montreal. The thesis contains much historical information on the village of Kangiqsualujjuaq and its people.

Scott completed a Masters of Landscape Architecture (Research) Degree and a Landscape Architecture with Honours Degree at the University of Adelaide. His Master’s project, which involved relocating to Montreal to study for one year at the École d’Architecture de Paysage (Université de Montréal) in 2000, examined the various traditional techniques that Canadian Inuit use to navigate and way-find. His thesis entitled Inuit and Scientific Ways of Knowing and Seeing the Arctic Landscape is available from the Barr Smith Library at Adelaide University.

Scott developed an Aboriginal seasonal calendar for the Adelaide Plains, South Australia for his Honour’s project, which features in Adelaide, Nature of a City (ed. C. Daniels, 2005). He has worked for the landscape architecture firms Fifth Creek Studio (Adelaide) and Courchesneap Paysages (Montreal). He has lectured in geography and landscape architecture at the Universities of McGill and Adelaide. In 2008, Scott will be teaching a seminar subject about Indigenous ways of knowing and seeing the land and sea called Indigenous Conceptions of Landscape. This seminar will explore Inuit and Australian Aboriginal notions of place and space.

With funds from a Melbourne University Joint Research Grant and an Early Career Researcher Grant (2007), he is currently exploring how the Torngat National Park and the Kuururjuaq Provincial Park schemes, which are under development in Northern Canada, have incorporated Inuit traditions of managing and sustaining the environment. The project is being jointly undertaken with Peter Jacobs, Professor of Landscape Architecture at the École d’Architecture de Paysage, Université de Montréal. Support for this project is also provided by the Canadian High Commission in Canberra through the Faculty Research Program Grant.
