Biography
Emily Potter is an ARC Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning, University of Melbourne. Her current research, funded by an ARC Discovery Grant held with Professor Paul Carter, focuses on the poetics of place, and the work of public art in the remaking of environments. Her PhD, completed in 2003, examined discourses of belonging and place in Australian cultural productions. Prior to her current position, she was a postdoctoral fellow at the Hawke Research Institute for Sustainable Societies, University of South Australia, and has taught Media and Cultural Studies at the University of Sydney.
Dr Potter is the co-editor of a forthcoming book, Fresh Water: New Perspectives on Water in Australia (MUP, 2007), that explores the import of humanities, social sciences, and creative art knowledges to the pressing water crisis facing Australia. Her academic articles have appeared in both Australian and overseas journals including Antipodes, Southerly, Cultural Studies Review, and the Australian Humanities Review. Since 2000 she has edited the on-line journal of Australian writing in the humanities, Altitude.
Dr Potter has worked with Professor Carter in the realisation of several of his public space designs. She is currently involved in the production of Mallee, a collaboration between Prof Carter, Harry Nankin, John Wolseley and others. Dr Potter is also a freelance writer, and has written on design, contemporary public art and cultural production for architectural publications, as well as mainstream media.
