Biography
Elizabeth Presa is a sculptor and installation artist who exhibits nationally and internationally. Focusing on the interconnections between art and philosphy, the poetics of materials, and the sustainability of sculpture practices, Elizabeth's work seeks to gives a material image to themes and ideas located in Continental European Philosophy. In 2004 Éditions Galilée, Paris, presented an exhibition of her work made in response to Jacques Derrida, which was later exhibited at the Musee de Livres D' Artistes Contemporains. In 2005 she undertook research in Paris on Maurice Blanchot's evocation of L'Inconnue de la Seine which culminated in an installation Moon Water, with the exhibition catalogue for containing critical essays by Jean-Luc Nancy and Andrew Benjamin. Her research on the interconnections between Rodin, Rilke and Blanchot is published in After Blanchot: Literature, Criticism and Philosophy (University of Delaware, 2006).
As Head of the Centre for Ideas, and as the coordinator of a University Wide Breadth Subject, Eizabeth has expertise in interdisciplinary curriculum development, implimentation and teaching. In 2005 she was Key Note Speaker at 'Interdisciplinarity and the Arts' conference , Korea National University of the Arts, Seoul, and in June of this year at the 'Interdisciplinary Art and Education in the 21 Century ' conference at EWHA Woman's University Seoul, South Korea. With the London based writer and curator Hans Ulrich Obrist, and the Central Academyu of fine Arts, Beijing, Elizabeth is developing an international archive and programme of Artist working with Philosphers.
Elizabeth has received numerous residencies, awards and grants including in 2002 a residnecy at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore, and the Power Institute Scholarship for a six-month residency at Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris. In 2006 the Association Française d'Action Artistique (AFAA) awarded her a three month residency to develop video installations based on works in the collection of the Louvre Museum. The first of these The Smile of Madam Houdonì is a collaboration with Jean-Luc Nancy. In January 2007 she exhibited new work on JJ Rousseau in Paris. Most recently she has been awareded a 3 month residency at Mount Holyoke college in Massachusettes. Elizabeth Presa's work is featured in Verwisch Die Spuren (Diaphanes) by the philosopher Alexander Garcia Düttmann.
