Biography
Peter Scales completed a BSc(Hons) degree from the University of Melbourne in 1981 and worked in the coal industry for a number of years before completing a PhD in 1988 (Melb). He worked for ICI in the UK for three years in the area of particle processing and returned to Australia to manage a research centre at the University of Melbourne for seven years. He then became an academic in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering with research interests in the area of slurry flow, particle dispersion, particle flocculation and separations technologies including thickening and filtration. His special area of interest is the relationship between particle characteristics such as size, shape and surface chemistry and suspension flow properties. He has major research projects with the minerals, water and dairy industries in the area of slurry flow and water recovery as well as consulting interests through Rheological Consulting Services. Since 2007 he has been deputy Dean of the School of engineering. He is on the editorial board of four journals, is a Fellow of the IChemE and Engineers Australia and has won prizes for both his teaching and research, notably the Frederick White Prize of the Australian Academy of Science.
