Biography

Since graduating in 2000 with an MSc(Hons) in biochemistry, I have worked on the molecular basis of dental development. The major goal of this work has been to identify and characterise the proteins that are important for protein secretion and bulk calcium handling in ameloblasts. I have been involved in the development of methods for microsample proteomics, as needed for characterisation of global protein expression patterns in scarce dental tissues. I have also contributed to the functional characterisation of individual proteins of interest using classical biochemistry approaches. In 2002 I joined the Melbourne Research Unit for Facial Disorders, and have since played a central role in facilitating the translational research activities of the Unit. This work has involved collaborating with dentists to establish novel mouse models of developmental dental defects (DDD). A feature of this effort has been the integration of morphological, micromechanical, ultrastructural, cellular and molecular techniques to enable robust mechanistic characterisation of enamel defect pathogenesis.
